VanHorn Saddlery is located 5 miles north west of Ogallala, NE on
Hiway 26. VanHorn Saddlery specializes in building and repairing western
saddles. Jake VanHorn is the owner and operator of the shop. He grew up on a
ranch in western North Dakota and continued his cowboy education on ranches and
feedlots in Montana, Wyoming and Nebraska. Jake has wore a lot of leather off
the tree and has a deep appreciation for how saddles and tack should fit the
horse and rider, while maintaining a pleasing appearance at the same time. He
has been doing tack and saddle repair for about 15 years. Jake is mostly self
taught although in the fall of 2008 he attended a saddle making school in
Montana to further his skills in the saddle making art. Jake enjoys working with
leather and creating a new master piece every time a customer comes in his shop,
whether it is in building a new saddle, chaps, checkbook covers, belts or
suspenders. Jake measures each person individually so that he can get the
perfect fit for that particular customer. He then listens and works with the
customer on different tooling or customization options, thus making every
creation a truly one of a kind work of art.
Jake also enjoys doing tack and saddle repair as it is a way to revive and put
new life into an old saddle, or piece of tack making it look and feel as if it
were new again. He can do virtually anything that you can come up with that is
made of leather. Jake is a creative and handy individual that will work with you
until the final product is perfect.
